Stan Kotara, stood at the podium and watched as hit after hit played on the screen in the auditorium. The video replayed vicious hits from NFL, NHL, and other sports highlights where athletes, undoubtedly, sustained some sort of a head injury. The reactions of wincing and grimacing from the crowed gave insight into the veracity of the collisions. That’s how the 2014 UIL Concussion Update began. Stan then turned to address the crowd. “Pretty gruesome, right?” he said. No objection was given.
Stan presented his 2-hour symposium to discuss concussion managment to a variety of attendees including school administrators, coaches, and athletic trainers. This unique event drew attendees from around the South Plains ranging from Post, to Olton, to Seminole, as well as the local Lubbock area. Stan's discussion provided insight into concussion management strategies so as to educate and strengthen the ability to diagnose and treat concussions appropriately at the time that they happen.
